Water and the cultural landscape in the Guadix hinterland

Abstract

Water usage and the long-established irrigation have played an essential part in the configuration of the cultural landscape of the Marquisate of el Cenete, particularly with regard to the distribution of the acreage and the settlement network. This is not to minimise the importance of Guadix as the local centre, with the complexity that that implies in the historical and territorial interpretation, and in forming criteria for the cultural identity
