Abstract

The Zújar baths have enjoyed a long history dating back to Roman times, with phases of splendour and decline. Known as the Baths of Benzalema, they were managed for a long time by the Jeronymite monks of Baza, who kept control following the refurbishment of 1797. On secularisation, the Almagro family acquired the property and effected a trans- formation that placed it on a par with the best spas of Europe. The damming of the Negratín submerged the structures, but the hot springs were salvaged to serve the new installations.
